Peru's Manu National Park has more than a million and a half hectares, ranging from the high Andes to lowland, tropical rainforest. The National Park has about 1,000 species of birds, making it one of the best bird watching destinations not only in Peru, but in the entire world.
The mountainous region is accessible by motor vehicle, and the first destination is the Cock- of-the-Rock Lodge, followed by the Amazonia Lodge, Pantiacolla Lodge, and finally the Amazon Manu Lodge. The Amazonia and Pantiacolla lodges are home to over 500 species of birds. The Amazon Manu Lodge, located outside of Manu National Park, is the best lodge for birding with 550 species of birds registered there. The Amazon Manu Lodge is located close to ‘Blanquillos’, the most famous Macaw clay lick in the Manu area; as well as the 140-foot Canopy Tower Tree and Blanco Oxbow Lake. There is a 30 km trail system around the Lodge, and just a 45-minute walk from the lodge is the best-known mammal clay lick, where there is a good chance to see a Tapir and much more jungle wildlife.
The city of Cusco is at an elevation of 3,400 m.a.s.l.; Acjanaco, the high part of Manu, is situated at 3,556 m.a.s.l.; the Cock of the Rock Lodge is situated at 1,450 m.a.s.l.; the Amazonia Lodge is at 500 m.a.s.l.; the Pantiacolla Lodge is at 450 m.a.s.l., and the Manu Camping Lodge sits at 270 m.a.s.l.
