SOUTHERN - MACHUPICCHU

CUSCO

(3,400 m.a.s.l.) The city of Cusco is located in the southern part of Peru, and was the capital of the Inca Empire. Due to its prominence as the center of the Inca culture, there is places for birding around Cusco in the Southern sierra.

 

 

BEARDED MOUNTAINEER

MACHUPICCHU:

Machupicchu is the best-known archeological site in Peru. The sanctuary-city includes more than 32,590 hectares, and is built atop a mountain at 2,500 m.a.s.l. The area has 406 bird species, 60% of which are migratory. The area is characterized by humid mountain scrub, second-growth scrub, evergreen forest, and streams.

HUACARPAY - LAKE

Just 30 km from the city of Cusco, along the road to Abra Malaga, this Andean fresh water lake is characterized by marshes, arid mountain scrub, and agricultural fields. The Lake is home to Andean waterfowl, Hummingbirds, and the Bearded Mountaineer.

 

BLACK-CHESTED BUZZZARD-EAGLE

Common: White-tufted Grebe, Silvery Grebe, Cinnamon Teal, Puna Teal, Yellow-billed Pintail, Plumbeous Rail, Andean Gull, Giant Hummingbird, Bearded Mountaineer, Rufous-naped Ground Tyrant, Andean Negrito, Yellow-winged Blackbird and more.

Uncommon: Green-tail Trainbearer, Rusty-fronted Canastero, Streak-fronted Thornbird, Golden-billed Saltator

Rare: Southern Pochard, Black-bellied Wistling Duck, Hudsonian Godwit (migratory), Baird's Sanpiper (migrtory), Upland Sanpiper (migratory)

ABRA MALAGA

45 km from the village of Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley, the road to Quillabamba provides easy access to Abra Malaga. Characterized by mountain scrub and large rocks, this dry forest is home to specialty birds like the White-tufted Sunbeam, Great Sapphirewing, Creamy-crested Spinetail, and Chesnut-breasted Mountain-Finch. Indeed, the area is home to some bird species that cannot even be seen in Manu.
